The Charming Small Town of Flat Rock, North Carolina
October 22, 2021 - Updated February 23, 2023From the artistic city of Asheville to the ski slopes of Boone, North Carolina offers a variety of exciting experiences for its visitors and residents. However, you don’t always have to go to the hotspot destinations to find magic. Sometimes the real gems are the small towns, charming and rich in character and history.
One of these special little towns is Flat Rock, NC, home to two of our Simple Life communities: The Hamlet and The Village. Flat Rock is quiet and calm, a great place to take a step back and slow down. So, what is there to do in Flat Rock? Here are a few personally selected recommendations.
Flat Rock Playhouse
After the pandemic, I think we all have a new appreciation for live entertainment. Whether you’re a live music fanatic or a lover of the theatre, the Flat Rock Playhouse has something for you. This playhouse was built in 1952 following World War II. A performing group called The Vagabond Players bought the land and built the playhouse, and in 1961 it was designated as The State Theatre of North Carolina. Today, the Flat Rock Playhouse hosts a variety of performances for visitors to enjoy. They even have special shows for the holidays, so keep an eye out for the playbill!

Little Rainbow Road
Little Rainbow Road is a quaint cluster of shopping and dining with some really unique finds. The Wrinkled Egg, originally the first and only general store in the town, is an eclectic shopping and dining spot, a great place to bring your grandkids. Grab a table on the patio and enjoy some delicious BBQ or a wood fired pizza, shop around the assortment of clothes, toys and accessories and order some baked goods to take with you on your way out.
Carl Sandburg Home
Carl Sandburg was a three-time Pulitzer Prize winning poet and biographer, known as the “poet of the people.” He passed away in 1967, but his home and belongings have been preserved. The home consists of three stories, filled with exhibits and Sandburg family furniture, décor and belongings, and can be explored through a guided tour. Other excursions include the barn and walking trails on the property. Special events occur throughout the year, especially during the holiday season which will be here before we know it!
Small towns like Flat Rock offer a uniqueness that you can’t find in the bigger cities. There’s something to be said about living in a quaint town, with the city just down the road when you need a fix. It allows you to slow down your life and really immerse yourself in a community, and that’s what Simple Life is all about!
